Background
Deborah Nyasha Peters, frequently referred to as Debbie Peters, is a Zimbabwean-born professional whose career encompasses finance, real estate, and international consulting. She completed her early education in Zimbabwe and the United Kingdom. Peters received an Honours Degree in Pharmaceutical Technology from the University of Zimbabwe, attending from 1987 to 1990. She subsequently earned a Masters in Pharmaceutical Technology from Kings' College London between 1991 and 1993. From 1998 to 2000, she completed a Master in International Business at Pepperdine University in the United States.
Career in Finance and Consulting
Initially pursuing entrepreneurship, Peters opened pharmacies in Zimbabwe before relocating to the United States in 1998 for further studies. During a ten-year stay in the US, she spent eight years working on Wall Street in various senior investment roles. Her responsibilities included managing a multi-billion dollar investment fund for the Depository Trust and Clearing Company and handling hedge funds with companies such as JP Morgan and Globeop.
In 2008, Peters relocated to South Africa to serve as a Senior Advisor in the treasury division of the power utility company ESKOM. During her tenure from 2008 to 2010, she was involved in financing large infrastructure projects, participating in efforts that secured $6 billion in funding from the World Bank and the African Development Bank for power stations. From January 2010 to December 2011, she acted as the Managing Director of Peters Gibsons Investments in South Africa.
Peters moved to Nigeria in December 2011. Beginning in January 2012, she worked as a Fund Manager for AMSCO (African Management Services Company), where she was responsible for establishing the AiQ Capital Real Estate and Hospitality Fund in Lagos. In December 2013, she returned to Zimbabwe, working as an independent consultant. Under Debbie Peters Consulting, she advised banks, multinationals, and insurance companies, set up offshore funds in Mauritius, and consulted for the World Bank on a business competitiveness project. While in Zimbabwe, Peters also ran as a candidate for the Harare City Council Ward 7.
Real Estate and Current Roles
Peters transitioned into the US real estate sector and currently works as a Global Real Estate Advisor with ONE Sotheby’s International Realty in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She specializes in commercial, investment, and healthcare real estate, drawing on her pharmaceutical background to assist medical professionals with specialized acquisitions and leasing. She is also an advocate for affordable housing and previously served on the City of West Palm Beach Zoning Board of Appeals.
Writing and Other Ventures
Peters is the author of the book A Modern African Nomad: From Africa To The Diaspora And Back, which discusses the modern African migration to the Diaspora, the challenges faced by emigrants, and the experiences of repatriation.
She has participated as a public speaker at events such as TEDx Harare and the Hotel Investment Conference Africa (HICA). In addition to her corporate roles, she founded Nyasha Africa, a nonprofit organization focused on healthcare and education.
