Farai Hallam was born in England to an English father of Italian descent and a Zimbabwean mother. He began his involvement in association football as a youth player, playing as a defender in Stevenage's academy from 2010 until 2012. During his time as a player, Hallam stated a desire to represent the Zimbabwe national football team. His playing career ended when he was released by Stevenage at the age of 18 in 2012.
Following his release from Stevenage, Hallam gained employment at The Football Association (The FA). To ensure he remained involved in football, he completed his qualifications to become a referee. His administrative career progressed alongside his officiating, and by 2020, he was appointed as The FA's National Referee Manager.
As an official affiliated with the Surrey County Football Association, Hallam advanced through the ranks of English football. He made his first officiating appearance in the English Football League (EFL) in 2023 and took charge as the primary referee for his first EFL match in 2024.
In January 2026, Hallam made his Premier League refereeing debut in a match between Manchester City and Wolverhampton Wanderers. During this fixture, Hallam denied a potential penalty for Manchester City. He was subsequently asked by the video assistant referee (VAR), Darren England, to review the incident. Hallam upheld his initial on-field decision, gaining recognition as the first Premier League referee to refuse to overturn a decision when instructed to do so by VAR.
