Thompson completed his education at Marlborough High School. Following this, he pursued a career in golf, a path that earned him a scholarship to the United States. While in America, he attained a degree in business before returning to Zimbabwe to launch his professional ventures.

Upon returning to Zimbabwe, Thompson started a broadcasting media business and eventually became a television personality. He later entered a partnership to run an online advertising company that experienced significant growth over the years.
Today, he heads Gary and Associates (also known as the Gary Thompson Agency or GTA), a marketing and advertising organization operating under the slogan "We Bring Vision". The agency utilizes marketing, advertising, public relations, and digital media to build brand strategies. The company has collaborated with numerous notable organizations, including NetOne, ZOL, Pioneer Coaches, the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, the African Union, and the International Labour Organization. In 2014, the Gary Thompson Agency was named the "Trusted Choice Agency of the Year" across its 13 offices in recognition of its customer service and ethical standards.
Golf Administration
Thompson has maintained a lifelong passion for golf. In 2016, he transitioned into sports administration when he was elected President of the Zimbabwe Golf Association. Upon his appointment, he stated his intent to revive the sport, unify professional players, attract sponsors, and ensure professional golfers could earn a living through the game.
Personal Life and Incidents
Thompson married his wife, Paola, in June 2003, and they have four children together. He also has a brother named Darren Mark Thompson. A religious man, Thompson frequently cites faith and family as his central driving principles.
In 2012, Thompson intervened in a robbery at a coffee shop in Borrowdale. After a fellow patron was robbed of cash and an iPad, Thompson attempted to alert motorists in the parking lot to block the suspects' getaway vehicle. During the altercation, he was struck by the thieves' car and sustained a broken arm.
