Early Life and Education
Jah Prayzah was born on July 4, 1987, at Nyadire Hospital in Uzumba Maramba Pfungwe District, Mashonaland East Province, Zimbabwe. He is the youngest of five children born to John Chamunorwa Mukombe and Shirely Savanhu.
He attended Musamhi Primary School and Musamhi High School in Murehwa before moving to Harare, where he completed his O’Level and A’Level education at Kuwadzana High 1 School. During his youth, he developed an interest in music, learning to play the mbira and performing in school assemblies and church choirs.
Musical Career
Early Releases (2001 - 2012)
Jah Prayzah began recording music in the mid-2000s. His early recordings included dancehall, reggae, and Afro-jazz tracks. He compiled his early work into the album Dura (recorded around 2006).
His official debut album, Rudo Nerunyararo, was released in 2007. He followed this with Sungano Yerudo and Ngwarira Kuparara, the latter of which featured popular tracks like "Gotchi Gotchi" and "Dande" (featuring the late Chiwoniso Maraire). In 2013, he set a record on the Radio Zimbabwe Top 100 countdown by securing the top three spots with "Gotchi Gotchi," "Maria," and "Chirangano".
Commercial Breakthrough and Mainstream Success (2013 - 2019)
In 2013, Jah Prayzah released the album Tsviriyo, which won multiple National Arts Merit Awards (NAMA) in 2014, including Outstanding Album, Outstanding Song, and Outstanding Male Artist. He subsequently released Kumbumura Mhute in 2014 and Jerusarema in 2015. Jerusarema won four awards at the Zimbabwe Music Awards (ZIMA), including Album of the Year.
His 2016 album, Mudhara Vachauya, included the single "Watora Mari," a collaboration with Tanzanian artist Diamond Platnumz. The music video received heavy rotation on continental platforms like MTV Base and Trace Africa. In October 2016, Jah Prayzah became the first Zimbabwean artist to win an MTV Africa Music Award, taking home the Listener's Choice award.
In 2017, he released Kutonga Kwaro, which featured collaborations with international artists, including Yemi Alade ("Nziyo Yerudo"). His 2018 album, Chitubu, featured tracks such as "Dzamutsana" and "Sadza NeMuriwo".
Recent Albums and World Tours (2020 - Present)
Jah Prayzah continued releasing projects regularly, including Hokoyo (2020) and Gwara (2021). In May 2023, he simultaneously launched two albums: Chiremerera and Maita Baba.
In May 2025, he released his 14-track album Ndini Mukudzeyi, featuring songs such as "Ruzhowa" and "Moto". The release was followed by the "Ndini Mukudzeyi World Tour," which included performances across South Africa, Europe, Australia, and North America, culminating in a homecoming show at the Harare International Conference Centre (HICC). In early 2026, he released the single "Mucheka Wejira".
Musical Style and Stage Persona
Jah Prayzah's musical style is categorized as Afrofusion, incorporating traditional Shona rhythms, jiti, and the mbira alongside modern instruments.
His stage persona is characterized by military style performance outfits, which earned him the nickname "Musoja" (Shona for soldier). He serves as a Culture Ambassador for the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, and his stage regalia is custom-tailored for his performances.

Personal Life
Jah Prayzah is married to Rufaro Chiworeso. The couple has four children: a son named Mukudzeyi Junior. and three daughters named Keanna, Kayla, and Kelly. He also has a son from a previous relationship. His father, John Mukombe, passed away in January 2024.
