- Microfinance Fraud Allegations: In 2016, Mushonga and two associates, Tatenda Mandimutsira and Njabulo Ndebele, were accused of defrauding a registered microfinancier in Harare of $166,000. The Zimbabwe Republic Police alleged that the trio used falsified documents and claimed to represent a non-existent airline called "Dream Air Company" to secure the loan. - Arrests and Other Allegations: In August 2019, Mushonga was reportedly arrested in Sandton while carrying a South African smart ID card with the name "Dick Lefa Nzula," though the case was later struck off the roll for further investigation. He has also faced allegations of drug dealing in Bryanston alongside another suspect , and was accused by a Nigerian national of fraudulent vehicle sales involving a Jaguar and a Mercedes GLE.
- Mushonga's Response: Mushonga has publicly denied the fraud and fugitive allegations, maintaining that his wealth comes from legitimate business practices. In March 2021, he challenged the media to produce evidence that he was ever arrested for the 2016 fraud or that he skipped a court trial, offering a R50,000 charity donation if the claims could be proven. He claims he had already left Zimbabwe when the alleged fraud occurred.
Personal Life
Mushonga is in a high-profile relationship with South African actress Khanyi Mbau, who is seven years his senior. The couple made their relationship public on Instagram in February 2021 and have appeared together on the Netflix reality series Young, Famous and African.
The relationship experienced a publicized rift in August 2021 after the couple moved to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates to start a business together. During the trip, Mbau left a salon and took a flight back to South Africa without informing Mushonga, which led him to post emotional videos on Instagram expressing his distress. The couple later reconciled and have since gotten matching tattoos of each other's names.
