Background

Nelson Chamisa was born on February 2, 1978, in Fort Victoria, Rhodesia (now Masvingo, Zimbabwe). He spent his early years in Gutu, Masvingo, where he attended Alheit High School. Chamisa pursued higher education across several institutions, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and Public Administration, a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree, and a Master's degree in International Relations and Diplomacy from the University of Zimbabwe. Furthermore, he completed Governance and Development studies at Stanford University in the United States and earned a degree in Pentecostal Theology from Living Waters Theological Seminary in Harare.

Early Political Career

Chamisa entered politics as a student activist in the late 1990s, serving as the secretary-general of the Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU). In 1999, he became a founding member of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) and rose through the party's ranks, serving as the chairperson of the youth assembly and later as the party's spokesperson.

In 2003, at the age of 25, Chamisa won the Kuwadzana seat in a by-election, making him the youngest Member of Parliament in Zimbabwe at the time. Following the establishment of a Government of National Unity in 2009, he was appointed Minister of Information Communication Technology. At 31 years old, he became the youngest cabinet minister in the country's history.

Leadership and Presidential Campaigns

Chamisa worked closely with MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai, serving as the party's organizing secretary and later as one of Tsvangirai's deputies. Following Tsvangirai's death in early 2018, a leadership dispute emerged within the MDC-T, culminating in Chamisa taking over as the acting president and leader of the MDC Alliance.

He ran as the MDC Alliance's presidential candidate in the 2018 general elections against President Emmerson Mnangagwa. After Mnangagwa was declared the winner, Chamisa challenged the election results in the Constitutional Court, but his petition was dismissed.

In 2020, following a Supreme Court ruling that declared his leadership of the MDC-T illegal, Chamisa eventually led his supporters to form a new political party, the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), in January 2022. He ran as the CCC's presidential candidate in the 2023 elections. On January 27, 2024, Chamisa resigned from the CCC, citing government interference that he claimed had compromised the party.

Personal and Professional Life

Outside of his political career, Chamisa is a qualified legal practitioner who has worked as an advocate at the Harare law firm Atherstone & Cook since 2014. He is also an ordained pastor in the Apostolic Faith Mission in Zimbabwe. Chamisa is married to Sithokozile Chamisa, and together they have two children, Ashley and Kudzaishe.
