Background

Africa University is a private, Pan-African institution located in Mutare, Zimbabwe. The idea for the university was proposed in 1984 by Bishop Emilio de Carvalho of Angola. The United Methodist Church approved the project in 1988, and the first group of 40 students was admitted in 1992. The university was established to provide higher education to students from across Africa, with a focus on leadership development and research.

Location and Campus

The main campus of Africa University is situated 17 kilometers northwest of Mutare, on a 1,542-acre rural site. The university also has a satellite campus in Harare, Zimbabwe's capital, which offers both undergraduate and graduate classes. The campus includes 36 buildings, 13 residence halls, a library, a chapel, a health center, and various academic and research facilities.

Academic Structure

Africa University is organized into five academic colleges:

  • College of Business, Peace, Leadership & Governance
  • College of Health, Agriculture & Natural Sciences
  • College of Social Sciences, Theology, Humanities & Education
  • College of Engineering & Applied Sciences
  • School of Law

The university offers more than 65 academic programs at undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma, certificate, and PhD levels. All courses are taught in English.

Student Demographics

As of the 2023–2024 academic year, Africa University enrolled about 2,200 students. Approximately 57% of the students are female, and 43% are male. The student body represents 26 African countries, with 25% being international students and 75% from Zimbabwe. The university has a high retention rate of 96%.

Leadership and Governance

The chancellor of Africa University is Bishop Gaspar João Domingos. The vice chancellor is Rev. Professor Peter Mageto. The university is affiliated with the United Methodist Church and is accredited by the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education in Zimbabwe.

Tuition and Fees

Tuition fees for the 2024 academic year are as follows:

Other fees include a $50 registration fee, a $125 health fee, and a $100 technology fee. Laboratory fees vary by program. Fees are payable in US dollars, but local currency is accepted at the prevailing exchange rate.

Campus Life

Africa University does not have a standard daily uniform for students. Academic regalia is worn only during graduation and formal ceremonies. There are no published official colors for daily attire.
