Ecocash charges and Tariffs are
  • Balance inquiry: $0.15
  • Request Bank Balance: $0.10
  • Request Bank Statement $0.15
The charges for USD and ZiG transactions vary depending on the type of transaction (sending, receiving, cash-out, bill payments) and the amount involved. For USD, cash-out charges typically range between 5%–10%.

The charges change frequently, but last time I checked, sending $10 USD costs around $0.50-$1.00 depending on the recipient type. ZiG transactions are generally cheaper. Always check *151# for current rates before transacting.

Pro tip: Merchant payments are usually free or very cheap compared to person-to-person transfers. If you're paying for goods/services, ask if they have a merchant account.

Ecocash shortcodes are USSD codes used to access various services. The main menu is available via *151# (Universal) or *153# (USD). To send money: *151*1*1#, to cash out: *151*1*2#, to pay merchant: *151*2*1#, and to buy airtime: *151*2*2#. You can typically do this for any ecocash dial flow.

I use *151# daily! For quick balance check, just dial *151*6*1#. To buy airtime for yourself, *151*2*2*1# is faster than going through the full menu.

Don't forget *153# for USD transactions! I always get confused between the two. Also, *151*0# gives you help if you're stuck in the menu.

How to avoid Ecocash charges

To reduce or avoid Ecocash charges, consider using merchant payments instead of person-to-person transfers, as they are usually free. Also, receiving money via merchant accounts or bank-to-wallet transfers can have lower fees. Where possible, transact in ZiG instead of USD to benefit from lower tariff bands. However, charges are part of the mobile money infrastructure and can’t be fully avoided unless using alternative platforms for zero-fee transactions like ZIPIT Smart or direct bank apps.

I switched to using ZIPIT for bank-to-bank transfers when possible. It's free and instant between most local banks. Only use EcoCash when I really need mobile money features.

Group your transactions! Instead of sending $5 three times (paying charges each time), send $15 once. Also, receiving money is usually free, so coordinate with family/friends.
