Background
Msengezi High School is a government secondary school located in Chegutu East, in Mashonaland West Province, Zimbabwe. The school offers O‑Level and A‑Level education and has both boarding and day students. It was started to serve rural and urban communities in the Msengezi farming region, and it has grown to enroll more than 800 students.
History and Leadership
Msengezi High School has been in operation for several decades and is known for its academic and cultural contributions. The school is led by Mr. George Rambanepasi, who has served as headmaster in recent years.
In 2024, the school introduced a student cabinet prefecture system—a leadership model where student leaders take roles similar to government ministers. This was the first school in Mashonaland West Province to try this system.
Academics
Msengezi High School follows the Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) curriculum. In 2023, the school recorded a 71% pass rate at O‑Level and a 97% pass rate at A‑Level. Four students achieved 15 points at A‑Level.
Students also take practical subjects like Agriculture, Food Technology, Computers, Building Studies, and Musical Arts. The school added Music as an exam subject for the first time in 2023.
Student Activities and Sports
The school is active in sports and culture.
- The girls’ volleyball team won a national gold medal in 2023.
- The boys’ handball team became provincial champions, and one player, Oleran Bandera, was selected for the national team.
- Students also compete in debate, choir, dance, quiz competitions, and public speaking.
Challenges
Despite academic success, the school has faced problems. In recent years, water shortages have affected learning. The school relies on a community borehole located far away. Power cuts made it difficult to pump water, though some help has come from local government to improve solar power.
There have also been security and management issues. In late 2023, robbers broke into the girls’ hostel. In another case, a student was seriously injured, raising concerns about health and safety. Parents have requested audits and better accountability from the school leadership.
Alumni and Cultural Impact
The school has produced several well-known Zimbabweans, especially in music and media. These include:
- McDonald “Mac Dee” Chidavaenzi – music producer
- Guspy Warrior – Zimdancehall artist
- KVG (Kudzai Violet Gwara) – radio personality
Msengezi High was also one of the first schools to record and release its own music albums in Zimbabwe.
